COLLEGE STATION -- The BCS Grand Slam Group hosted the 2006 & 2007 event here in Bryan/College Station after the tournament had been held in Wichita Falls for the past 20 years. This past year, 5 cities applied to host the tournament (Katy, Waco, Abilene, Bryan/College Station & Wichita Falls) with the USTA Texas Section narrowing it down to Bryan/College Station and Wichita Falls.
On Saturday, the Junior Tennis Council of the USTA Texas Section voted and the BCS Grand Slam Group won the vote and will have the tournament here for the next 2 years. The last 2 years, the tournament was the largest Junior tennis tournament in Texas Junior tennis history with 888 players in 2006 & 868 players in 2007. This tournament will bring in over $1 million dollars to our community each year with the players, parents and coaches being here for 8 days. This tournament is the high level junior players in the state (Super Champ), with our area having 20 players qualify to play, last year. Anik Cepeda of College Station coming in 5th place in the Girls 16, was the best finish from an area player.
Are plans are to have this tournament here for the next 20 years and make it an event not only for the players from around the state but our community. The City of College Station has been a great help planning the 2006 & 2007 tournament as well as hosting the tournament banquet in The Zone Club at A&M for 800 players and the parents and coaches.
