COLLEGE STATION -- The 5th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team will travel to Gainesville, Fla. on Saturday for a preseason exhibition match against the No. 7 Florida Gators. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium.
“We’re excited about this preseason trip,” A&M head coach G Guerrieri said. “This will be an excellent opportunity for our team to come together and fight for a common cause. Florida is a very talented and well-coached team who will surely expose some things about us that we need to fix before the start of the regular season. It’s wonderful to be able to play such great competition in a friendly exhibition game environment as we start to wrap up our two-a-day workouts.”
Florida was picked to repeat as the Southeastern Conference champions this season. The Gators return 10 starters from the 2006 team that reached the NCAA Round of 16.
The Aggies have been selected to once again win the Big 12 Conference crown. In just three seasons, the Aggies have brought home five league championship trophies. A&M also had four players named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team, sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Arnold, senior defender Paige Carmichael, senior midfielder Amy Berend and senior forward Ashlee Pistorius.
Texas A&M holds a 3-0 advantage over Florida in regular season play. The last official meeting between the two teams was in 2000, with A&M winning 3-1 in Gainesville, Fla.
The Aggies will kickoff the regular season in the friendly confines of the Aggie Soccer Stadium on Friday, August 31 with a 6 p.m. match against Dartmouth.
