NEW YORK (AP) - Defending champ and second-seed Maria Sharapova has been knocked out of the U.S. Open in the third round by
Poland's Agnieszka Radwanka 6-4,1-6, 6-2. Sharapova became the first number-two seed to be eliminated from the tournament before the round of 16 since Andrea Jaeger in 1981. The 6-foot-2 Sharapova seemed to be bothered by the swirling winds that played havoc with her high ball toss on serves.
The 18-year-old Radwanska is ranked 30th in the world.
Seventh-seed Nadia Petrova also took an early exit, upset by
Hungary's Agnes Szavay 6-4, 6-4.
Men's fourth seed Nicolay Davydenko moved into the fourth round
with a 7-5, 6-love, 7-5 win over Spain's Nicolas Almagro.
