The Blinn College volleyball finds itself in a familiar place in the first
National Poll. After being ranked #6 in the Preseason Poll the Bucanneer
volleyball team moves up one position to #5.
2006 national runner-up Western Nebraska Community College (Scottsbluff, Neb.) takes the top spot in the first Division I Volleyball regular-season poll. The Cougars are followed by 2004 runner-up Salt Lake Community College (Salt Lake City, Utah) in second and defending national champion Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs, Iowa) in third.
Western Nebraska has started the 2007 campaign 19-1 overall with impressive wins over ranked teams Salt Lake, Iowa Western, College of Southern Idaho and Northeastern. The only loss for the Cougars was to second-ranked Salt Lake. Western Nebraska is led by Jennifer Eichler (3.7 kills per game), Shawntell Jones (1.2 blocks per game), Nayka Benitez (3.2 digs per game), and Soriana Pacheco (10.0 assists per game, 1.1 aces per game).
Salt Lake is 20-1 with wins over ranked opponents Western Nebraska and College of Southern Idaho. The only loss for Salt Lake was to top-ranked Western Nebraska in the championship of the Salt Lake Invitational. The Bears are led by Cinthia Silva (3.4 kills per game, Talita Santos (1.0) blocks per game, Michaela Hanakova (10.0 assists per game) and Morgan Lloyd (4.3 digs per game, .72 aces per game).
Iowa Western begins 2007 with a 19-2 overall record with wins over Barton, Hutchinson, Iowa Central, Iowa Lakes and Northeastern. The Reivers have lost to top-ranked Western Nebraska and to Kishwaukee (the top-ranked team in Division II). Iowa Western is led by returning All-American Juliana Paz (5.9 kills per game, .94 aces per game), Barbara Conceicao (1.1 blocks per game), Meng Meng Xu (12.0 assists per game) and Gabby Pfannenstiel (3.9 digs per game).
Frank Phillips College, coming off a sixth-place finish at nationals, is ranked fourth this week with a 17-0 overall record. The Plainsmen have defeated ranked opponents University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, Tyler and San Jacinto this season.
Blinn College finished fifth a year ago and takes the fifth spot in the first regular-season poll. The Buccaneers are a perfect 12-0 this season and have not lost a game over the 12 matches. Blinn has defeated Vernon, Midland, Lee, Laredo, Redlands, Temple and San Jacinto this season.
