COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M soccer freshman Whitney Hooper was named the Big 12’s Newcomer of the Week for her play in the 2-1 victory over No. 18 West Virginia and 1-1 tie against No. 20 Penn State, the league office announced today. It was her first conference honor.
Hooper factored into all three of the Aggies’ goals over the weekend. Against West Virginia, Hooper was responsible for getting A&M on the board as the Houston- native planted a shot deep from the right side back across the goalmouth into the lower left post. Ten minutes later, Hooper fired another rocket that bounced off the keeper straight to the feet of a crashing Cydne Currie for the game-winner.
On Sunday it was Hooper who was taken down inside the Penn State penalty area setting up a Paige Carmichael penalty kick which the senior defender would convert.
Hooper and the Aggies will return to action on Friday as A&M hosts the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at 7:30 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
