COLLEGE STATION -- The six-time national champion Texas A&M equestrian team will begin practicing and competing at the new Brazos Valley Exposition Center in the spring of 2008.
The Aggie equestrian team has competed at N.W. ŒDick¹ Freeman Arena ever since its creation as a club sport in the fall of 1989. The equestrian program was picked up as a fully sponsored athletic department sport in the fall of 1999, winning six national team titles during its eight year run with Freeman Arena as a home base.
³The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has been absolutely wonderful to us during our first eight years as a varsity sport and we are forever grateful for all they have done in helping us achieve six national championships during our run as a varsity sport,² Texas A&M Head Coach Tana Rawson said. ³We¹ve grown tremendously in several aspects as a team which has led us to the point where our girls needs more time in the ring.²
The Brazos County Expo Center has a vast amount of unused arena time, particularly during the middle of the week, and will allow the equestrian team to build stalls, offices, and a locker room for the team.
³We are looking forward to offering our girls the kind of increased practice time that some of the other top equestrian schools in the country currently have,² Rawson said. ³We have been very successful in riding at the highest levels given the amount of practice time we have had in the past. We think this move to give our girls the kind of practice time that we feel is necessary will boost our performance in the ring to even higher levels than we¹ve ever been before. With us vacating Freeman Arena, it will also benefit the equine science program at Texas A&M by allowing them more class time in the facility and gives them chances to expand their new and upcoming
