Astros Hire Former Phillies GM Wade

HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros today named former Philadelphia general manager Ed Wade as their new GM.

The Phillies fired Wade two years ago after he failed to lead
them to the playoffs in eight years as GM. The 51-year-old spent 16
seasons with the Phillies.

Wade was in Houston's public relations department early in his
career.

The Houston has been interviewing GM candidates since firing Tim
Purpura and manager Phil Garner on August 27th.

Bench coach Cecil Cooper was interim manager. Team president Tal
Smith has been the interim GM.

Smith credited Wade with helping develop the current Phillies
nucleus.

Some in Philadelphia criticized Wade for his reluctance to make
significant moves before the trade deadline and for giving
big-money, long-term deals to players who underachieved.
