WACO, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s tennis team closed out play at the HEB Baylor Invitational with two players advancing to the consolation quarterfinals of the singles main draw held Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Sophomore Brad Williams (Cape Town, South Africa) and sophomore transfer Chris Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) each put up a tough fight in consolation play with close third-set tiebreakers. Williams lost 10-7 to Michael Breler of Texas Tech, while Chirico was edged by seventh-seeded Thomas Liversage of San Diego, 10-8.
In doubles competition, junior All-Big 12 Conference standout Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and Chirico came up short against the fourth-seeded duo of Rice’s Ralph Knupfer and Christoph Mueller, 8-6, in the quarterfinals of the 32-team doubles main draw.
Meanwhile, freshman Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) reached the round of 16, but dropped a two-set match to Texas’ Hubert Chodkiewicz, 6-4, 6-3, in the B singles draw. The Aggies as well as the rest of the tournament field played three to four matches under the intense Texas heat.
“We had some real high-quality matches this weekend,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “We had a lot of tough matches with some of the top players and top teams in the country. The purpose of these fall tournaments is to get match play and for our players to work on things in preparation for the spring. Like football, the biggest improvement you can see usually occurs from the first game to the second game. I feel really good about our team, because we have chemistry, a strong work ethic and camaraderie this year. We are going to be very successful as the season progresses.”
Up next, the Aggies will travel to the ITA All-American on Sept. 29-Oct. 7 in Tulsa, Okla. Senior All-American Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.) and Conor Pollock will compete in the main draw of singles and will be two of the top-ranked players at the tournament. Makowski and Pollock are ranked No. 34 and No. 37 respectively in the preseason ITA/FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
