COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M Aggies unofficially begin the 2014 baseball campaign on Monday, September 16 when they commence fall practice with an afternoon session on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
As has become tradition under head coach Rob Childress, the Aggies will spend the fall competing internally for the Omaha Cup, a staple of the Texas A&M baseball culture. The event features the Aggies being split into different teams and competing against one another both on-and-off the field in order to sharpen the competitive nature and chemistry of the squad. Fall practices and scrimmages will once again be open to the public in the recently renovated Blue Bell Park.
The Aggies are coming off a 34-29 season and extended their school-record streak to seven consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship in 2013.
The fall roster includes the familiar names of 21 returning lettermen along with 13 talented newcomers. Highlighting the returners for the Aggies are two All-SEC performers from the 2013 season. Outfielder Krey Bratsen and starting pitcher Daniel Mengden were both named to the All-SEC Second Team. Mengden and first baseman Cole Lankford earned spots on the SEC All-Defensive Team. Other returning starters include catcher Troy Stein, first baseman Hunter Melton, infielder Blake Allemand, outfielders Jace Statum and Jonathan Moroney and designated hitter Mitchell Nau. Starting pitchers Grayson Long, Corey Ray and Parker Ray and relief pitchers Jason Jester, Matt Kent, A.J. Minter, Jason Freeman, Andrew Vinson, Zach Brashear and Ty Schlottmann will also be back for the 2014 campaign.
Texas A&M will cap off fall practice with the Maroon and White Series on Oct. 28-30 with 3:30 p.m. games on each day.
