For the second time in less than a month, Texas A&M’s Stefania Hristov has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for women’s tennis, the league office announced today.
Hristov, from Iasi, Romania, clinched the winning point in Texas A&M’s 4-3 victory at No. 13 Michigan on Saturday in the Aggies’ only match of the week. In a must-win situation, Hristov overcame a 4-2 third-set deficit to defeat the Wolverines’ Mimi Nguyen, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, and give the Aggies the decisive 4-2 lead.
With the victory, Hristov ran her win streak to three and improved to 5-0 at the No. 6 singles line.
A&M’s win against Michigan marked its third consecutive victory over a Top 15 opponent, and the Aggies improved to 5-1 and broke into the Top 10 for the first time since 2001.
Hristov and the Aggies return to action Monday as they play host to Sam Houston State at 3 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The match is the first of four home matches over a seven-day span as A&M hosts former Big 12 Conference foe and 19th-ranked Baylor on Wednesday, Feb. 27 and then opens its inaugural SEC season Friday, March 1 against No. 38 South Carolina. The Aggies close out their longest home stand of the season with a meeting against the defending national and SEC-champion Gators on Sunday, March 3.
