RANCHO MIRAGE, California -- Texas A&M freshman Saska Gavrilovska reached the semifinals in singles at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, highlighting the Aggies’ final weekend of tournament play before hosting Mississippi State in A&M’s dual match season opener on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
“In spite of two strep throats, a twisted ankle and a few other maladies, we were able to get some good matches,” A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. “In particular, Gavrilovska and (Jana) McCord played some impressive tennis, which is very encouraging since we will be calling on our freshmen to contribute heavily this season."
A&M won five of seven first round matches in straight sets, including victories by all four Aggie freshmen against representatives from University of San Diego and University of Southern California. Gavrilovska then posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over 79th-ranked Matea Cutura of Pepperdine to advance to the quarterfinals. Gavrilovska won her third consecutive match by defeating Lindsey Kostas of No. 1-ranked Stanford, 7-5, 6-3, in the quarterfinals before falling to ninth-ranked Chanelle van Nguyen of UCLA, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals.
Aggie senior Cristina Stancu, who had a first-round bye, won two matches to advance to the semifinals but withdrew from the tournament due to an injury.
In doubles, Stancu and partner Stefania Hristov defeated Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox of Pepperdine, 7-5, in the quarterfinals but were unable to compete in the semifinal match due to an injury.
