NEW YORK CITY, NY -- Texas A&M true freshman men’s tennis player Harrison Adams continued to make a splash Thursday in his first U.S. Open Junior Championships being held in New York. Adams defeated the No. 11-seed Daniel Masur of Germany, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round played earlier on Thursday and then came back against the No. 8-seed Kaichi Uchida and lost a tough, hard-fought match, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in the third round Thursday evening.

“I am very proud of Harrison,” Aggie head tennis coach Steve Denton said. “He beat the 11th-seed this morning and went toe-to-toe with a Top 10 player in Uchida of Japan. This really bodes well for him as a rising star on the collegiate ranks representing Texas A&M. The 12th Man is really going to enjoy watching him play.”

Harrison began playing tennis at the age of three and comes from a tennis family as the fourth of six children of Dr. Don and Cynthia Harrison. His father played at Texas Tech and his mother played at Oklahoma Christian University. His older brother Henson played at Oklahoma Christian University while two sisters Alex and Samantha played at Texas Tech. Samantha is a former Texas No. 1 player who earned All-Big 12 honors as a freshman as well as ITA Rookie of the Year honors. Younger siblings Henry and Sarah excel in their age group as well.

As a freshman at New Braunfels High School, Adams helped the team win the Texas Team 5A State Championship and also a Mixed Doubles State championship with his sister, Samantha. The duo would go on to win the Texas U.S. Open Qualifier in mixed doubles.

In 2011, he represented the state of Texas and helped the team win the Boys 18 USTA National Team Championship going undefeated along the way. He also earned his first ATP point at the age of 16 in his first professional futures tournament in 2011 in Brownsville, Texas, and reached the doubles semifinals in the 2011 Tulsa Futures as well as the doubles finals of the Niceville, Florida, Futures event.

The Texas native was granted a wild card into the main draw at the U.S Open. Most recently Adams made the Round of 16 at the USTA National Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He also teamed with Aggie fellow freshman Shane Vinsant to win the doubles championship at the USTA Freeman Men’s Futures Tournament in Joplin, Missouri.
