COLLEGE STATION – National signing day included 16 letters of intent arriving in the Texas A&M track and field office on Wednesday. The Aggies signing class includes five men and 11 women who will join the national championship program next fall.

The group of athletes signing with Texas A&M covers a variety of event areas, providing the Aggies quality and depth.

“This is a good group of athletes,” said Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry. “This is our first group of signees this season, with a few more to come later in the year.

“This is a normal class for us in that we are trying to add athletes in all event areas. We recruit talent and don’t necessarily recruit certain event areas. We recruit people who we think want to come to Texas A&M.”

In the sprint and hurdle events the A&M signing class includes O’Jay Ferguson and Just’N Thymes for the men along with Matilde Alvarez Sierra, Ebony Crear, and Briyahna Desrosiers for the women.

Ferguson, a 400 meter runner from the Bahamas, and Thymes, a 100 and 200 meter sprinter from Arizona, are currently competing on the junior college level. Crear is a prep hurdler from Long Beach Poly HS in California while Desrosiers is a 200 and 400 meter sprinter from North Lawndale Prep in Chicago and Mexico native Alvarez Sierra is a 100 and 200 meter sprinter.

In distance events the Aggies add Jacob Perry from Sanger, Texas on the men’s side along with Melanie Enriquez of Round Rock Stony Point and Devin Norton, who attends Denton Guyer and is from Lantana, Texas.

Vertical jumpers in the signing class include pole vaulter Carl Johansson from Orange Lutheran HS in Newport Beach, California, along with vaulter Sara Kathryn Stevens of New Braunfels, Texas and high jumper Makenzie Smajstrla, who attends Manvel HS and is from Rosharon, Texas.

Throwers in the group include Ioannis Kyriazis, a javelin thrower from Athens, Greece, and hammer thrower Bailey Simmons of Alabama Christian in Montgomery, Alabama.

Three members of the A&M signing class are versatile athletes who will compete in the combined events of the pentathlon indoors and heptathlon outdoors for the Aggies. The crew consists of Shaina Burns of Lakeville South HS in Prior Lake, along with Minnesota, Audrey Malone of Bryan HS in Bryan, Texas, and Ashtin Zamzow of Goliad, Texas.
