COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The reigning SEC Western Division Champion Texas A&M Soccer team unveiled its 2013 schedule on Wednesday afternoon. The upcoming autumn will feature 19 matches, including 13 at the friendly confines of Ellis Field.
"We are very excited about our 2013 team and the great lineup of matches on our schedule,” Head Coach G Guerrieri said. "Our fans will be able to see the Aggies play many traditional national and SEC powers in 2013."
The schedule officially begins on August 23 when the Aggies host the Duke Blue Devils, a 2012 NCAA Elite Eight participant.
In addition to Duke, Texas A&M will host three other 2012 NCAA Championship squads in non-conference action, including Arizona State (Aug. 30), Pepperdine (Sep. 1) and Baylor (Sep. 8). The match against Baylor represents A&M’s first match against a Big 12 squad since joining the SEC.
Other non-conference home games include UTSA (Aug. 25), San Diego (Sep. 6), Massachusetts (Sep. 13) and Cal Poly (Sep. 15).
The Aggies open SEC home action against Mississippi State on September 27. They also play Vanderbilt (Sep. 29), Arkansas (Oct. 11), Ole Miss (Oct. 25) and LSU (Oct. 31) on the home pitch.
"I believe that this slate of 13 home games is the most we've ever had in a regular season,” Guerrieri said. “That record number of home games along with the incredible upgrades at Ellis Field will hopefully add up to a record number of season ticket sales and memberships in our Aggie Soccer Club in 2013."
The soccer squad will share home weekends with the Aggie football team four times in 2013. The women will play the Friday and Sunday surrounding the football games against Rice (Aug. 31), Sam Houston State (Sep. 7) and Alabama (Sep 14), as well as the Friday of the Vanderbilt game (Oct. 26).
"Many of our home game correspond well with Texas A&M home football schedule,” Guerrieri said. “So I'm excited that we can enhance our fans' weekends with extra opportunities to support their Aggies on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons at Ellis Field along with those Saturdays at Kyle Field.
The Aggies play six road matches, all league affairs. Their first road game is at Tennessee on September 20. They have weekend sets at Auburn (Oct. 4)/Missouri (Oct. 6) and Alabama (Oct. 18)/Georgia (Oct. 20) before finishing their road schedule at Florida on October 27.
Eight of the 19 matches will be against teams that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Championship.
Texas A&M will play an exhibition match at UC Irvine on August 14 and host the Maroon & White Game at Ellis Field on August 17.
The SEC Tournament is scheduled for November 4-10 in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Ellis Field received a facelift in the offseason thanks to funding from Mark and Julia Ellis. The upgrade on the west side of the stadium features a new cantilevered roof structure in the tradition of great soccer stadiums around the world. The new roof will shade the reserved seating sections of the west side of Ellis Field as well as the exclusive Club Level areas, located above the reserved seating sections, where Aggie Soccer Club events will be held prior to and during home games in 2013.
In 2012, the team won a Western Division title in the first season in the SEC. The Aggies earned a bid to their 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 before falling to Florida State in Tallahassee. A&M finished the season ranked 14th in the nation with a 19-5-1 record (10-2-1 SEC). The 19 wins was one shy of the school record.
