MONTEREY, Calif. – The Texas A&M men’s golf team wrapped up play at the Carmel Cup on Sunday by defeating Vanderbilt 6-0 in medal match play at Pebble Beach.

The Aggies, who lost to TCU 4-2 and defeated Texas Tech 3½ to 2½ on Saturday, completed the three-round event in second place with 12½ total medals. Their total left the Aggies just one medal behind the Horned Frogs, who won the event with 13½ medals, and ahead of Texas Tech and Vanderbilt, which finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

“Overall, it was a great start for us,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “I think if we were playing a stroke play event we probably would have won, shooting a combined 10 under par the last two rounds at Pebble Beach. The best part of the weekend was that we didn’t really have a bad round. I think our highest score was a 76, so that’s pretty good for an opening weekend.”

Texas A&M’s Johannes Veerman carded a 69 on the day, giving him a three-round total of 213 to finish in fourth place individually behind overall winner Julien Brun of TCU.

Junior Jade Scott (74-73-69=216) also fired a 69 at Pebble Beach on Sunday, while senior All-American Cameron Peck (72-71-71=214) turned in a 71 and freshman Ben Crancer (75-65-74=214) shot a 74.

Senior Case Cochran (72-76-73=221) and sophomore Greg Yates (75-73-73=221) each carded a 73 on the day.

“I’m proud of our guys for the way they battled and competed out there,” Higgins added. “It was a great way to start the season at a couple of great golf courses and I’m really excited about our team going forward.”

The Aggies are back in action at the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., on Sept. 17-18.
