COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s tennis team suffered two heart-breaking defeats in the final rounds of both singles and doubles at the ITA/USTA Texas Regional in Waco on Tuesday afternoon.
“Today was a day of missed opportunities in both finals,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “There are great lessons to be learned by our players in these types of matches and sometimes you have to go through situations like this before you achieve a breakthrough. We have a very tough region and I thought our team played very well overall. We just have to put our heads down and continue to work as hard as we possibly can. I’m very excited about the potential of this team in the spring.”
Shane Vinsant, the tournament’s third-seeded player, fell to Baylor’s ninth-seeded Diego Galeano in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. After claiming the first set, Vinsant built a 3-0 advantage in the second set before losing six of the next seven games to drop the set. The nation’s 56th-ranked player finished the fall season with a 12-5 record.
“I really felt Shane was going to win today,” Denton said of the sophomore. “He played a very solid first set and built a 3-0 lead in the second. I give Galeano a lot of credit as he just kept battling and raised his level of play when he needed to. Shane left him a slight window of opportunity and Galeano seized the momentum. To his credit, I thought Shane continued to play valiantly, but it just wasn’t to be today.”
The top-seeded tandem of Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow suffered a similar, devastating defeat against Texas’ fifth-seeded duo of Lloyd Glasspool and Soren Hess-Olesen, 8-7 (6). The third-ranked pair concludes the fall season with an 8-3 record.
“We were up a break against Texas in the doubles and had a chance to get up a double-break, but we couldn’t convert,” Denton said on the doubles contest. “I am confident Jackson and Junior will learn from this and be better as a result.”
The men’s tennis team will be in action again in the spring when it opens the season on January 19 with a twin-bill against Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas-Pan American. To learn more about the team, visit AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter.
