MANSFIELD, Texas --- The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team took runner-up team honors at the Southwest Collegiate Plunge on Saturday at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.
The Aggies finished the two-day meet with 754 points to finish behind Texas, which won the team title with 857.5 points. Trailing the Aggies and Longhorns were SMU with 677.5 points and the University of Incarnate Word with 573 points.
Texas A&M tallied a pair of individual wins with junior diver Hayden Jones and junior swimmer Omar Enriquez grabbing first-place finishes. Jones remained undefeated by winning the 3-meter dive with a score of 387.40, and has now swept both springboard dives in the Aggies’ first two competitions of the year. Enriquez, who sat out 2011-12 with an injury, won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.11.
The Aggies opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay with the foursome of freshman Alexander Theocharidis, senior John Wagner, junior Henrik Lindau and junior Kyle Trosket touching the wall in 1:33.27.
Impressing in the 200-yard freestyle was freshman Mateo Muzek, who took second place with a time of 1:36.20. Senior John Dalton contributed a fifth-place finish in the race in a time of 1:42.52.
Wagner and sophomore Hayden Duplechain took third- and fifth-place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke with Wagner finishing in 2:07.76 and Duplechain touching in 2:10.96. Enriquez was third in the consolation race with a time of 2:09.42.
Freshmen Theocharidis and Muzek were solid in the 200 backstroke with Theocharidis taking fourth in the “A” final in 51.94 and Muzek contributing a swift 51.56 for second in the consolation race.
In addition to Enriquez’s win in the 200 fly, the Aggies received strong swims from senior Max Lewis, junior Donnie Walker and Duplechain. Lewis was fifth in the “A” final in 1:56.84, while Walker was second in the consolation in 1:56.43 and Duplechain was third in 1:56.99.
The Aggies closed out the meet with a third-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the foursome of Muzek, Dalton, Lindau and Troskot turning in a time of 3:02.67.
