COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The reigning SEC Western Division Champion Texas A&M Soccer team continues its spring season on Friday (March 1) with an 8 pm match against the Baylor Bears at Ellis Field.
The game against the Bears is the third of five exhibition matches for the Aggies, who ended the 2012 season with an 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, a No. 14 national ranking and a 19-5-1 record. The Maroon and White toppled the Houston Cougars, 3-0, on Feb. 9 and edged The Nationals, a professional touring team from Austin, 1-0, on Feb. 16. In the spring, A&M has outshot opponents 48-16 and goalkeepers Jordan Day and Renee McDermott have combined for seven saves in 180 minutes of scoreless action.
Former colleagues in the Big 12 Conference, the Texas A&M and Baylor did not meet in regular-season action in 2012. The squads have played 19 times in the fall with the Aggies owning a 14-4-1 edge in the all-time series.
The Aggies have a wealth of talent on offense as five of their top six scorers from 2012 return and four will take the pitch on Saturday, including Kelley Monogue (10 g), Shea Groom (5 g/7 a), Meghan Streight (3 g/6 a) and Allie Bailey (4 g/2 a). All-SEC goalkeeper Jordan Day also returns after a sophomore campaign in which she set a league record with 14 shutouts and posted a 0.63 goals-against average and 79 saves.
Rachel Lenz, Jackie Tondl and Karlie Mueller also return to an A&M defense that held opponents to 16 goals in 25 games.
The Bears are coming off a 19-1-5 season, finishing second in the Big 12 with a 5-0-3 mark. Baylor advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 before falling to North Carolina in penalty kicks. Baylor’s top returnee is defender Kat Ludlow who earned All-Central Region Second Team honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
