COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas A&M Aggies welcome Houston South Select of the Women’s Premier Soccer League to the friendly confines of Ellis Field on Wednesday at 8 pm as the Maroon and White begin the spring schedule. The game was originally scheduled for March 2, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The contest will be free to spectators. Free parking will also be available for fans wishing to attend the exhibition.
Texas A&M returns 18 letterwinners from the 2013 campaign, including 10 of 11 starters. The returnees account for 54 of the Aggies’ 56 goals from last season. Texas A&M welcomes back All-Americans Shea Groom and Meghan Streight, along with fellow All-SEC performers Jordan Day, Leigh Edwards and Kelley Monogue. All three newcomers, Mikaela Harvey, Stephanie Malherbe and Haley Pounds are expected to suit up for the Aggies.
The South Select club is coached by David DeVerteuil who was formerly a member of the South Texas U23 State Select team as well as the 2008 USASA Region III Coach of the Year. David Abramowitz, a graduate of A&M and former intern with the soccer program serves as assistant coach.
The Maroon and White finished the 2013 season ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll. A&M posted an 18-5-2 record for the year, claimed their first-ever SEC regular-season title with a 9-2-0 league ledger and captured an SEC Tournament crown. The Aggies appeared in their 19th consecutive NCAA Division I Championship, advanced to the Second Round for the 16th consecutive year and appeared in the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in program history.
