COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 17 Texas A&M softball team was tabbed third in the SEC West in the Southeastern Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The Aggies were picked to finish behind reigning National Champion Alabama and 2012 Women’s College World Series (WCWS) team LSU. The Tide won the league’s first national title last season and earned eight of a possible 13 first-place votes to lead in the poll. Alabama is also ranked No. 1 nationally in the USA Today/NFCA poll.
Ranking behind A&M are No. 4 Arkansas, No. 5 Mississippi State, No. 6 Auburn and No. 7 Ole Miss.
In the Eastern Division, Tennessee leads the way with five first-place votes. The Lady Vols are followed by No. 2 Missouri, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Florida, No. 5 Kentucky and No. 6 South Carolina.
Points for the poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Eastern Division and a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 basis for the Western Division. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
The Aggies, who earned 31 points in the poll, rank fifth overall behind Alabama (12), Tennessee (12), LSU (28) and Missouri (30). Filling out the final eight spots are Georgia (34), Florida (38), Arkansas (51), Mississippi State (56), Kentucky (58), Auburn (63), South Carolina (65) and Ole Miss (74).
A&M starts the 2013 season in Los Angeles on Feb. 8. The Aggies’ first conference series is at Missouri, March 8-10. The 2013 SEC Softball Tournament will be held May 8-11 in Lexington, Ky.
