Aggies Stand Eighth at NCAA Swimming & Diving

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana --- The Texas A&M women’s swimming and diving team took its first step toward the program’s seventh straight top 10 finish with a solid first day at the 2013 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at the IU Natatorium on the IUPUI campus.

The Aggies stand in eighth place in the team standings after scoring points in five of the day’s six events. Rounding out the top 10 teams in the standings were Georgia (163), Tennessee (150.5), Arizona (127), California (102), Stanford (90.5), USC (90), Florida (74), Texas A&M (72), Texas (65) and Minnesota (41).

The highest finish of the day for the Aggies was a fifth-place effort by the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome of junior Paige Miller, junior Breeja Larson, junior Caroline McElhany and sophomore Lili Ibanez touched the wall in a time of 3:30.63

The best individual finish came from senior diver Rebecca St. Germain, who took eighth place in the one-meter springboard. St. Germain turned in a score of 306.85. A second-round score of 31.20 doomed a solid list by St. Germain that featured four dives with 55.0-plus scores.

The Aggies grabbed a pair of consolation final victories to open the evening session. The 200-yard free relay touched the wall first for a ninth-place overall finish in a season-best time of 1:28.89. That time makes the foursome of Ibanez, junior Erica Dittmer, McElhany and Larson the third fastest in school history.

Moments later, junior Sarah Henry dominated the 500-yard freestyle field in the consolation final by more than a second and a half with a time of 4:36.53. Senior teammate Maureen McLaine took sixth in the consolation final (14th overall) with a time of 4:39.90.

Also contributing points on the first day were Dittmer and McElhany in the 200-yard IM. Dittmer placed 15th in 1:58.35 and McElhany was 16th in 1:58.88.
