Aggies Turn Senior Night into Statement

COLLEGE STATION-- The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team affirmed their new ranking with a sound defeat of SMU at the Student Recreation Center Friday.
The Aggies made a statement winning 11 of 13 events for a 142-92 win over the SMU Mustangs. After starting the night honoring the seven graduating seniors (John Dalton, Nick Han, Max Lewis, John McClure, John Wagner, Wes Wheeler, and Austin Wilson) the men’s squad exploded off the blocks sweeping six events and taking at least third in every event.
“The guys swam really well,” said head coach Jay Holmes, “I talked to them less before this meet than in any pregame. I said ‘Its up to you guys, go win.’ And they did.”
Leading the attack were junior Omar Enriquez and sophomore diver Ford McLiney, both taking multiple victories. Enriquez won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:07.24 and the 200 butterfly in 1:48.37, while McLiney swept the dives winning the one-meter with a score of 350.93 and the three-meter with 375.68.
Riding the momentum of two consecutive dual meet victories, the Aggies were exciting from the start, winning the opening relay. The foursome of Alexandros Theocharidis, John Wagner, Henrik Lindau, and John Dalton took down the 400 medley relay in an incredible 3:13.79.
Other victories came from junior Paul-Marc Schweitzer in the 200 freestyle in 1:37.53, junior Henrik Lindau in the 50 freestyle in 20.18, junior Simon Frank in the 200 individual medley in 1:48.38, senior John Dalton in the 100 freestyle in 43.69, freshman Alexandros Theocharidis in the 200 backstroke in 1:45.99, and freshman Mateo Muzek in the 500 freestyle in 4:29.91.
The dominating performance from the Aggies was evident all the way through the meet. The men had a solid 104-27 lead through seven events. Texas A&M and SMU have a rich rivalry filled with many close dual meets and after a back-and-forth record the past several years, the Aggies enjoyed the sound victory and are gearing up for what’s next.
“This was a great win for us, the guys swam really well. We are in a great place, but there are a lot of things we need to work on heading into the SEC Championships.”
The Aggies will not take to the pool again until hosting the SEC Championships at the Student Recreation Center beginning Tuesday Feb. 19 and continuing through Feb. 23.
