COLUMBIA, Missouri -- No. 3 Texas A&M won its 12th consecutive match and remained undefeated in the Southeastern Conference with a 7-0 shutout at Missouri tonight at the Green Tennis Center indoor courts.
The match concluded a grueling SEC five-match road swing for the Aggies, who improve to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in SEC matches. Missouri falls to 7-7, 1-6.
“No question the SEC schedule and competition is not for the faint of heart,” A&M second-year head coach Howard Joffe said. “Playing indoors tonight in Missouri was a tough assignment, but I was delighted with the way the Aggies embraced the challenges and competed hard.”
A&M won both doubles matches to be completed to take a 1-0 lead. A&M’s Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Nazari Urbina defeated Maria Christensen and Rachel Stuhlmann, 8-2, at the No. 2 line. Ninth-ranked Stefania Hristov and Cristina Stancu clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Alex Clark at No. 1.
No. 3 doubles went unfinished with Aggie twins Ines and Paula Deheza leading Elisha Gabb and Madison Rhyner, 6-5, when the doubles point was decided.
Sanchez-Quintanar quickly gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead at the start of singles, defeating #114th-ranked Gaytan-Leach, 6-2, 6-2, at the top of the lineup. Ines Deheza won her match at No. 4 singles by the identical score in a victory over Elisha Gabb to put A&M ahead, 3-0.
Urbina gave the Aggies a 4-0 lead, clinching the winning point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Christensen at No. 3 singles. Hristov kept the Tigers scoreless and put A&M ahead, 5-0, after defeating Rhyner, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 6 line.
Stancu then came out on top in a marathon match at No. 2, where the junior defeated Stuhlman, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (12), and Wen Sun completed the shutout with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (6) victory over Clark at No. 5.
“In singles, Sanchez likely played the best, but everyone did a good job,” Joffe added. “I’m very excited and fortunate to be coaching this team.”
The Aggies aim to tie the school record for consecutive wins when they return to the friendly confines of the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on Friday, March 29 to take on No. 28 Tennessee. A&M is 6-0 in home matches this season.
