All-Southland Conference Bearkats

By  |

Highlighted by running back Timothy Flanders and cornerback Bookie Sneed, who now stand as the third and fourth Bearkats to earn All-Southland honors four years in a row, 16 Sam Houston players have been named to the 2013 all-league football team.

The Bearkats placed five players on the first team and five on the second. Six Kats were honorable mention selections.

Flanders, a senior from Midwest City, Oklahoma, has added another first to his amazing career at Sam Houston State. The running back is the first Bearkat to earn All-Southland first team honors each of his years wearing orange and white.

Flanders is the only running back in Southland history to amass more than 5,000 yards rushing and score more than 400 points. He stands No. 10 in all-time FCS rushing with 5,406 career yards.

Sneed, a senior from Conroe, earned honorable mention honors as a freshman in 2010, second team selection in both 2011 and 2012 and is a first team member this year.

Senior Torrance Williams from Waco becomes the second Bearkat to earn All-Southland honors at two positions in the same year. Williams is a first team choice at both wide receiver and punt return specialist. Williams has 51 catches for 945 yards and 12 touchdowns and returned 28 punts for a school record 446 yards.

Sophomore offensive lineman Donald Jackson III and senior linebacker Eric Fieilo also are first team selections. The left tackle from Kilgore earned honorable mention honors as a freshman. Fieilo, a former Euless Trinity star, led the Bearkats with 92 tackles in the regular season to pick up his first all-league honors.

Seniors Brian Bell of China Spring and Richard Sincere from Galveston both picked up all-conference honors for their third season in a row as members of the2013 All-Southland second team offense. Bell stands as Sam Houston’s all-time leader in passing and total offense yardage. Sincere has compiled more than 1,000 yards in three career categories (rushing, receiving and all-purpose yards).

Senior defensive linemen Andrew Weaver and Jarrett Brown both were second team selections to pick up all-league honors for a second year in a row. Weaver leads the Bearkats in sacks with six. Brown has totaled 42 tackles this year including three for losses.

Defensive back Michael Wade from Arp is a second team selection, his first time to receive all-conference honors.

Running back Keshawn Hill, tight end Shane Young, offensive linemen Brandon DeWitt and Matt Boyles, linebacker Tanner Brock and defensive back DeAntrey Loche all were honorable mention selections for the Bearkats.

Southeastern Louisiana quarterback Bryan Bennett was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year. Lions’ linebacker Cqulin Hubert was named conference defensive player of the year, while Ron Roberts was named the coach of the year. McNeese quarterback Cody Stroud was the offensive player of the year.

Sam Houston State, McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana all earned berths in the 24-team field for the 2013 NCAA Division I Football Championships. The trio’s selection marks the first time the league has placed three teams in the FCS playoffs since 2001.
