The Sam Houston baseball team hits the road for a three-game weekend series at Lamar. The Bearkats sit tied at the top of the Southland standings with Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch for Friday’s series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Sam Houston (19-13, 7-2) had their five game win streak snapped by No. 24 Texas A&M Tuesday night on the road. The Kats were winners of eight of their last nine games after a sweep of McNeese, wins over ranked Houston and Rice and a series win over SFA.
The Lamar Cardinals (24-10, 4-5) took two-of-three from the league-leading Southeastern Louisiana Lions and finished off the series with an 18-1 win. The Cards lost their first two Southland series to McNeese State and Central Arkansas.
Second baseman Jessie Plumlee is riding a 12-game hitting streak and has reached base in the Kats last 19 games. The senior leads the team with a .394 batting average.
Shortstop Carter Burgess has led the team in hits for most of the season (42) but third baseman Kevin Miller has closed the gap with 39 hits while batting .336. Miller has just one double and 38 singles this year.
The Bearkats leading run producer is catcher Anthony Azar. The junior backstop has 26 RBI with a team-high 12 extra-base hits. Left fielder Luke Plucheck has had an explosion of power recently with four homeruns in the last eight road games.
With a .365 team ERA, the Bearkats are second in the Southland in overall pitching. The pitching staff is second in the league in total strikeouts but also second in walks allowed.
Lamar leads the league in hitting with a .300 batting average but the Kats are second with a .291 average.
The Cardinals are led offensively by left fielder Darian Johnson who his hitting .396 with 25 RBI and 13 extra-base hits. The senior has ten doubles and three triples.
Designated hitter Seth Dornak has a team high 26 RBI while batting .313. Shortstop Sam Bumpers and first baseman Picha have each driven in 23 runs.
The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
