Bearkat Baseball Falls to Louisiana-Monroe 2-1

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- A complete game from Warhawk pitcher Cale Wine stifled the Bearkats as they fell 2-1 in the first game of a three-game series vs. Louisiana-Monroe.

Caleb Smith started for the Kats (1-4) and pitched 7.1 innings, striking out eight. Smith was stellar through the first seven innings, allowing only three hits. But in the eighth Smith walked two batters and was replaced by Jason Simms.

Simms struck out the first batter he faced but then struggled. He walked the bases loaded before allowing a Corben Green two-RBI base hit to right field. Green was three-for-four in the game.

ULM starter Cale Wine struck out seven batters in the game and did not issue a walk. He allowed gave up nine hits.

The Kats best scoring opportunities came in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases on three consecutive singles with no outs. Ryan Farney hit into a 4-6-3 double play and the runner scored from third. Azar then grounded out to end the inning.

Colt Atwood, Hayden Simerly and Kevin Miller each had two hits in the game.

The Kats and Warhaws will play game two Saturday at 4 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
