HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Sam Houston lost two close games on the Bearkats’ opening day at the North Texas Shootout softball tournament in Denton Friday.
First, the Bearkats fell 8-6 to Stephen F. Austin. Then Texas State handed SHSU a 4-2 loss.
Tayler Gray’s two-run double and RBI singles by Cecilia Castillo and Angelica Gonzales gave Sam Houston a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning against the Lumberjacks.
SFA rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third. Sam Houston extended the lead back to two runs after a solo home to left center by Sarah Allison in the fifth inning
A grand slam home run by Katelyn Standley provided the winning runs for SFA in the bottom of the fifth.
Two unearned runs spelled the margin of victory for Texas State in the second game.
Up 1-0 in the fourth inning, the Bobcats took advantage of two Sam Houston errors to build a 3-0 lead with two runs in the fourth inning.
The SHSU women got two of the runs back on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Coggins that scored Tori Koerselman in the fifth inning and an RBI single by Koerselman in the sixth.
Haley Baros pitched the second complete game in the second contest, facing 30 batters in seven innings.
Sam Houston will play Abilene Christian at 9 a.m. and Prairie View A&M at 11 a.m. Saturday.
