Looking to get back on track in the Southland Conference softball race, Sam Houston plays host to Nicholls in a three-game weekend series Saturday and Sunday at the Softball Complex.
Action begins Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The final game of the series starts at 12 noon on Sunday.
Sam Houston enters with a 12-15 season mark while Nicholls stands 8-22 this year. The Bearkats are tied for fifth place in the league standings with a 2-4 mark while the Colonels are in 10th place still looking for their first Southland victory at 0-5.
Sam Houston stands 1-2 for the week, defeating Texas Southern 7-3 Tuesday then falling in a doubleheader at Louisiana-Lafayette Wednesday by scores of 6-0 and 4-2.
Four Bearkat starters are putting up big numbers. Third baseman Tori Koerselman leads the team with a .361 average. Other top marks include shortstop Tayler Gray (.353), second baseman Alyssa Coggins (.333) and right fielder Cecilia Castillo (.324).
Sam Houston State has posted 25 home runs this year. Gray and first baseman Sarah Allison lead the squad with six home runs each. Designated player Hillary Adams has five home runs this year.
Haley Baros, Shelby Lancaster, Tayler Atkinson and Meme Quinn share duties in the circle for the Bearkats this year. Baros leads the team with 33 strikeouts.
Other Southland Conference matchups this weekend see first place McNeese play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; Northwestern State visit Stephen F. Austin; Central Arkansas battle Lamar in Beaumont and Southeastern Louisiana travel to Houston Baptist.
