HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Sam Houston upset No. 12 Baylor 4-3 in 10 innings in the opening game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday evening at the Softball Complex.
The Bears bounced back for a 12-0 run-rule victory in the nightcap. Baylor stands 24-6 for the year and Sam Houston is 15-17.
Down 3-0 going into the bottom of the 10th in the first game, the Bearkats loaded the bases, tying the game on a walk and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
After nine scoreless innings, Baylor scored three times in the top of the 10th after first baseman Holly Hall led off with a solo home run to right field.
But the Bearkats rallied to load the bases on three singles then score on a walk to designated player Hillary Adams. Right fielder Cecilia Castillo singled to score a second run and her sister Tiffany walked with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run. A wild pitch allowed pinch runner Jennie Kievel to cross home plate for the game winning tally.
Sam Houston posted six hits but had runners reach second base only three time in the first nine innings. Meanwhile, starter Shelby Lancaster allowed the Bears only four hits. The pitcher was backed up by stellar defensive plays by the Bearkats including a pair of double plays as SHSU kept the Bears scoreless to force extra innings.
Cecilia Castillo led the Kats at the plate in the first game going 3-for-5. Baros (6-8) got the win in relief.
Two –run homers by Clare Hosack in the first inning and Sarah Smith and Jordan Strickland in the fourth got Baylor off to a quick start in the second game. The Bears tallied 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Sam Houston returns to Southland Conference action this weekend hosting first place Lamar at the Softball Complex. The pair will play a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.
