WACO, TX -- First baseman Hillary Adams slammed a three-run homer over the left center field fence to power Sam Houston State to an 8-6 victory over Illinois State in the Bearkats’ opening game of the 2013 softball season Thursday.
The Bearkats are playing in the Baylor Bear Softball Invitational at Getterman Stadium in Waco.
Adams went 2-for-3 in the game with five RBIs. She gave the Kats a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a home run to left field.
Center fielder Tori Benavidez went 3-for-4 at the plate and second baseman Alyssa Coggins was 2-for-3 as Sam Houston totaled nine hits on the day. Shortstop Sarah Allison provided the other RBI for the Bearkats with a single in the first inning.
Shelby Lancaster was the starting pitcher for Sam Houston, going three innings. Meme Quinn picked up the victory, striking out five in the final four innings.
