NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana -- The second round matchup between No. 2 seed Northwestern State and No. 3 seed Sam Houston has been suspended until Friday morning.
The contest was stopped after 50 minutes of action with the Demons leading 1-0 through three and a half innings. After nearly a two hour lightning delay the decision was made to attempt to resume play at 9 a.m. Friday morning.
The forecast Friday is for more rain.
"Seems like it always rains at the conference tournament," SHSU head coach Bob Brock said. "We've dealt with this situation before. Hopefully we can get back on schedule tomorrow."
Northwestern State scored its run with two out in the first inning as first baseman Brianna Rodriguez doubled and designated player Cassandra Barefield singled in the run.
Sam Houston led off the top of the fourth inning with consecutive singles by Alyssa Coggins and Kim Damian. Demon third baseman Brittany Virgoe turned a ground ball into a double play to end the threat.
The winner of the Bearkats-Demons contest will take on Central Arkansas in the winner's bracket semifinals Friday. UCA, the No. 4 seed, upset No. 1 McNeese State 1-0 in nine innings Thursday afternoon.
The loser of the game wil face No. 5 Lamar. The Cardinals lost in the tournament's opening matchup to Central Arkansas 3-0.
