HUNTSVILLE, TX -- The Sam Houston women’s basketball team avenged their only previous Southland loss by defeating McNeese State 60-53.

Britni Martin scored 14 points to lead the Bearkats (13-9, 9-1 SLC). Martin struggled from the field but managed to hit 9-of-11 free throws. She also dished out five assists.

The Kats last meeting with McNeese State was Jan. 12 in Lake Charles. Sam Houston fell 62-58 after Ashlyn Bagget scored a career high 33 points.

“This one felt very good,” coach Brenda Nicholls said. “This is just a great win for our team.”

Sequeena Thomas put up another double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Thomas started slow but scored the final four points of the first half to give the Kats a 25-23 lead at the break.

The Kats only shot 30% in the first half but came out strong in the second half and hit 47.8% from the floor.

Two other Bearkats scored in double figures with Jasmine Johnson and Nyha Carter each having 10 points. Carter also added seven rebounds.

“We worked hard to make sure we maintained a four to six point lead because of their three-point shooting,” said Nicholls. “It was huge for us to never give up that lead.”

Ashlyn Baggett continued her hot streak against the Bearkats. Baggett scored 22 points including five three-point baskets. She was the only Cowgirl to score in double figures.

Next up for the Kats is a home game against Lamar Saturday afternoon.
