Bearkat Women Win at HBU

The Bearkat women’s golf team rallied to win the HBU Husky Classic to claim their second consecutive tournament championship. The Kats won the Arkansas-Little Rock Classic just a week ago.

Sam Houston State unseated the Lamar Cardinals who had own the event the last two years. SHSU placed first overall with a three-round total of 911, while Lamar (913) was just two strokes back.

Senior Shelby Hardy led the way for the Kats shooting back-to-back 70s in the second and third rounds. Hardy shot an 89 in the first round but finished strong and finished tied for 10th individually.

Jessica Borth was also tied for tenth after shooting 78-73-78-229. Borth was tied for sixth after the first day of competition.

Freshman Nicole Budnik was 17th (86-74-71-231), Meghan Musk was 24th (82-75-78-235), and Abigayle Corson was tied for 43rd (76-83-86-245).

Conference foe Central Arkansas finished third with a three-round total of 932 followed by the hosts Houston Baptist (939). Southland members A&M-Corpus and McNeese State were tied for seventh.

Next action for the Bearkat women is at Jacksonville University in Florida April 8-9. The Southland Conference Championships are the following week in Frisco, Texas.
