HUNTSVILLE, TX -- Marquel McKinney scored a team high 15 points but the Sam Houston men’s basketball lost an overtime thriller 59-58 to McNeese State.
McKinney hit three-of-six three-point baskets and four-of-four free throws to lead the Bearkats (12-10, 5-5 SLC). He also had five rebounds in the game.
The Kats had a 33-27 lead at halftime and led by as much as 10 points in the second half. However, SHSU failed to close out the game in the final seconds.
“Tonight was definitely a gut-wrencher,” said coach Jason Hooten. “We’re just disappointed.”
Dontae Cannon made a layup with three seconds left in regulation to tie the game 53-53. Cannon then hit a jumper with one second left in overtime. He finished with a game high 19 points.
Paul Baxter had 10 points, six assists and five rebounds. Michael Holyfield had eight points and five rebounds. Darius Gatson and James Thomas each added five points and six rebounds.
The Kats are back in action at Johnson Coliseum Saturday afternoon against Lamar.
