DeMarcus Gatlin had 15 points as the Bearkats fell on the road to Southeastern Louisiana 69-65 in Hammond, Louisiana.
Sam Houston had a 30-27 lead at halftime but couldn’t hang on. The Bearkats got out to a hot start and took a 7-0 lead. It took four minutes and 59 seconds for Southeastern Louisiana to get their first basket.
The Kats led until the 2:38 mark of the first half before the Lions tied it at 23. SHSU then regained the lead on a Will Bond three pointer with 1:25 left and held on until the break.
Paul Baxter had 11 points and three rebounds for SHSU. James Thomas and Darius Gatson added nine points each and Will Bond had eight.
Southeastern Louisiana was led by Brandon Fortenberry with 22 points including three three-point baskets. Dre Evans added 12 points and Roosevelt Johnson had 11.
The Kats turned it over 17 times, including nine in the second half.
“Now we’ve got to do what we’re supposed to do on the road and that’s get a split,” Coach Jason Hooten said. “We’ve got to go to Nicholls and find a way to get a win.”
The Bearkats will continue the road trip as they play at Nicholls State Saturday afternoon.
