Britni Martin scored 18 points to lead Sam Houston to a 58-53 Southland Conference women's basketball road victory over Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night.
Martin hit four free-throws in the final minute to put the game away after the Lions got within two points of the Bearkats. The senior finished eight-of-nine from the free-throw line.
Chanice Smith finished with 10 points and Jasmine Johnson had nine. Sequeena Thomas scored nine points and had eight rebounds. She is now two boards shy of the 1,000 mark.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half. Sam Houston shot just 9-of-32 from the field while Southeastern Louisiana went 9-of-30.
Sam Houston fell behind early in the second half before Jasmine Johnson and Chanice Smith hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Kats a 31-27 lead.
The Bearkat offense finally came to life. SHSU had a 22-5 run to take a 47-32 lead, their largest of the game.
Southeastern Louisiana railed late to get within a possession in the final two minutes.
After the Lions had gotten the score within 51-49, Chanice Smith and Britni Martin hit six free throws in the final minute to put it away.
The Bearkats will head to Nicholls State next for a Saturday afternoon matchup in Thibodaux, La.
