Bearkats Host Rice Tuesday

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Sam Houston State hosts nationally ranked Rice Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium. The Bearkat baseball team will wear special camouflage jerseys as part of “Service Appreciation Night.”

The Kats (12-11, 2-1) beat Rice, 3-0, earlier this season in Houston and are coming off of a series win over A&M-Corpus to open their Southland slate.

Rice (18-8, 2-1) won two-of-three over Southern Mississippi to start C-USA play. The Owls have won nine of their last ten and have gone 11-2 after losing to SHSU, March 6.

“Rice is playing very well right now,” Bearkat head coach David Pierce said. “They’re going to be a very tough team. We are going to have to be ready to go and be ready to pound the strike zone. If we do that and get some timely hits we’ll have an opportunity to win the game.”

Shortstop Carter Burgess leads the way offensively for Sam Houston. The sophomore is batting .363 with 11 runs scored and 13 RBI. His eight extra-base hits are tied for the team lead.

Second baseman Ryan Farney is batting .309 with 12 runs scored. Catcher Anthony Azar has a .301 average and a team-high 16 RBI.

Rice is led by Geoff Perrott with a .344 batting average with nine runs scored and nine driven in. Michael Aquino is hitting .314 with team-highs in runs with 17 and RBI with 18.

Prior to the baseball game, Bowers Blvd. will be closed from Sycamore Avenue to the edge of the Don Sanders Stadium parking lot from 5 to 10 p.m. for pedestrian flow, tailgate and police and military displays that include a rock wall and Humvee.

Each of the special “Warrior Camo Jerseys” will be auctioned off to fans and proceeds from the auction will benefit the Lone Survivor Foundation.

“It’s a privilege anytime we get to honor our country and be a part of something like this,” Pierce said. “It will be an honor for us to wear the camo jerseys on the baseball field.”

The jersey auction will be held online at www.gobearkats.com and will start on March 26 (game day) and end April 7. Bidding starts at $100. Fans can bid online during the Sam Houston versus Rice game.

Founded by former U.S. Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell and headquartered in Houston, the mission of the Lone Survivor Foundation is “to restore, empower and renew hope for our wounded warriors and their families through health, wellness and therapeutic support.” To learn more about the foundation, go to www.lonesurvivorfoundation.org .

Any fan with a military/service ID or wearing their uniform will be admitted free to the game March 26. Guests of military and emergency service personnel will receive a group rate of $4 per ticket.

“Service Appreciation Night” is aimed at honoring all service personnel – police, emergency service, fire, law enforcement and military – with special recognition to welcome Vietnam and Korean War veterans.

Tickets for the event are available now at www.gobearkats.com/tickets or by visiting or calling the Sam Houston athletic ticket office at the Ron Mafrige Field House at (936) 294-1729.
