The Bearkat men’s basketball team held on to a slim lead in the final minute to get a 63-52 win over Central Arkansas and move to 4-1 in league play.
Freshman Paul Baxter led the Bearkats with 19 points while going nine-of-nine from the free-throw line.
Baxter then closed out the game in the final minute. Central Arkansas had gotten within six points until Baxter hit four free throws in the final seconds to put the game out of reach.
“Paul’s maturing and learning the game,” Coach Jason Hooten said. “He’s learning when to take shots and when not to. He’s the type of player that, even though he’s a freshman, can take a game over. It’s something we haven’t had in a long time.”
The Bearkats took a 31- 24 lead into the locker room and Baxter led all scorers at the break with seven points. The Kats never trailed and the closest UCA got was within six points with 1:26 left to play.
James Thomas was the only other Bearkat to score in double figures while also leading the Kats on the boards. Thomas had 12 points and eight rebounds in 33 minutes on the floor.
LeQuentin Miles led Central Arkansas with 13 points. Jordan Harks was the leading rebounder with eight boards.
“Central Arkansas is really talented,” said Hooten. “We wanted to limit their shooting tonight and we got both of our goals. We held them to 36% from the field and 20% from three so I was extremely happy with that.”
Terrance Motley had four points but grabbed eight rebounds. Aaron Harwell and Jeremy McKay each had six points and Harwell had five assists.
The Bearkats will host Oral Roberts Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
