NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Sam Houston rolled to a three-set victory over Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches Thursday night as the Bearkats prevailed 25-20 25-23 26-24.
The victory upped Sam Houston’s overall record to 13-7. The Kats are 10-1 in Southland Conference action.
Deveney Wells-Gibson led the Bearkats with 17 kills in 38 attempts. Lauren Bohlen totaled eight kills and Haley Neisler and Shelby Genung each added six.
SFA won the first point of the match but Sam Houston never trailed again in the first set.
The second and third sets were much closer with 11 ties and five lead changes in the second frame and seven ties and four lead changes in the third.
With the score tied 23-23 in the second set, Wells-Gibson came up with a kill and Genung served an ace on set point.
The Bearkats rallied from a 17-12 deficit in the third frame to wrap up the match.
Tayler Gray assisted on 37 of Sam Houston’s 40 kills. Gray also picked up nine digs.
Wells-Gibson and Breanna Homer led the team with 15 digs each.
Neisler, Genung and Wells-Gibson each assisted on three blocks.
Sam Houston State heads to Northwestern State for an afternoon match in Natchitoches Saturday.
