BRENHAM, TX -- Blinn College men’s basketball coach Scott Schumacher wasn’t at all nervous about his home debut.
Instead, his Buccaneer defense made certain Lone Star College – Cy-Fair felt all the pressure as the Buccaneers defeated the Fighting Ducks 68-56 Thursday night at the Blinn P.E. Building.

Freshman guard Darrell Combs scored a team-high 20 points and freshman forward Rashaun Stimage added 18 to lead the Buccaneers (2-2) to the victory.

The Ducks played Blinn even through the game’s first 10 minutes, but the Buccaneers went to a full-court press that stifled Cy-Fair’s momentum and allowed the Bucs to carry a 47-34 lead into halftime. From there, Cy-Fair was unable to mount a serious threat to the Buccaneers’ lead.

“I thought our defense did a good job,” Schumacher said. “I thought we really doubled the post well and either made them take a quick shot or forced a turnover. I thought our defensive pressure wore them down.”
Combs’ 20 points was a season high. He has scored at least 13 points in each of the Buccaneers’ four games this season.

“Darrell has really been playing well for us,” Schumacher said. He’s a very good offensive player and he’s been playing well for us the last three games.”

Stimage brought the crowd to its feet with a pair of thunderous dunks in the second half, including one off an alley-oop pass from sophomore point guard Najee Farr.

“Rashaun is a tremendous athlete, but when he got those big dunks and the crowd got going, I think we kind of let up a bit,” Schumacher said. “We forgot what made us successful on the offensive end and we tried to do too many fancy things.”

Jarvis Nicks led Cy-Fair with a game-high 21 points.

The Bucs have now won back-to-back games after dropping their first two contests of the season. They were again without Donald Moore, who is expected to miss two to four weeks with a wrist injury.

The Buccaneers are in the midst of a six-game home stand at the Blinn P.E. Building, including a 4 p.m. Saturday tip-off against the Houston Blaze and a 7:30 p.m. game Monday against Kingwood College.
