Blinn softball wins three at Midland Tournament
Fourth-ranked Bucs sweep first day of showcase
MIDLAND, Texas – The fourth-ranked Blinn College softball team won all three of its games Friday in the first day of the Midland Tournament.
Blinn defeated Howard 11-5, Odessa 3-2 and Clarendon 13-5.
Blinn won its first game of the tournament thanks to a strong performance from sophomore pitcher Kaci Federwsich and a grand slam by freshman outfielder Tiffani McKnight.
Freshman Thomasina Garza went 2-for-3.
The Buccaneers defeated Odessa after freshman Shelbe Sterling hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Freshman Shannon Sain struck out five while earning the win.
The Bucs defeated Clarendon via mercy rule in five innings. Kris Davila went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, while Garza went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. McKnight went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and sophomore catcher Brittney Krchnak went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair. Freshman outfielder Leandra Maly went 2-for-4 as the Buccaneers finished with 14 hits for the game.
Sain earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season while Federwisch struck out five batters in relief.
Blinn, which is now 6-3 this season, continues tournament play with an 11 a.m. game against Midland and a 1:30 p.m. contest against Western Texas.
