BRYAN, Texas Fireworks weren’t the only thing on fire at American Momentum Bank ballpark Friday night as the Bombers extended their best season opening streak ever to a perfect 8-0. The game began slowly but ended hot with a Brazos Valley victory and an explosive firework show for all guests.
With no score to start off with, the Cane Cutters were able to beat the Bombers to the punch in the bottom of the third by getting on the board first. Acadiana chalked up two runs with a walk, a single, and two doubles. Not to be out done, the Bombers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Third baseman Miles Manning reached first on a single, followed by shortstop Matt Eureste with the same fate. Second baseman Patrick McLendon then made it to first on an error, advancing both runners and allowing Manning to score. Left fielder Brett Kauten then slammed a single to right that brought Eureste home. The inning ended with both teams tied at two.
Brazos Valley was able to consistently knock one in again in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and sixth. In the fourth Eureste earned a RBI on a sac fly that brought designated hitter Herb Romero in after he reached the bag on an error. The next inning Romero smacked a double and was brought home when catcher Alexis Mercado advanced to first on an error. In the bottom of the sixth center fielder Blake Kopetsky reached first on a single then advanced to third on a single by McLendon. Kauten earned his second RBI of the night on a sac fly that brought Kopetsky home. At the end of the sixth Brazos Valley held the lead at 5-2.
Acadiana closed the gap by one in the top of the eighth with a solo homerun, but was unable to do any further damage. The Bombers completed the game with a 5-3 win to remain undefeated in their season with an 8-0 record.
