Bryan-College Station, TX (July 3, 2013) – As an early Independence Day celebration the Bombers held Support Our Troops night on Wednesday while facing the Texas Marshals. The celebration was rounded out with a home sweep of the Marshals after a 9-3 Brazos Valley victory.
The Bombers got on the board early when shortstop Horacio Correa III leadoff with a double then was knocked in on a single by second baseman Patrick McLendon. In the top of the third the Marshals stole the lead by earning two runs, but their rally didn’t last long. The bottom of the third brought a four run rally for the Bombers, returning the lead to the good guys. Left fielder Brett Kauten reached first on a single, followed by a walk from first baseman G.R. Hinsley. Center fielder Blake Kopetsky approached the plate and slammed a three-run homerun, his first of the season, over the right field wall. Soon after, catcher Jake Henson ripped a triple to right and was able to come home on a pass ball. After three innings of play the Bombers led the Marshals 5-2.
Brazos Valley extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth when designated hitter Hunter Melton earned 2 RBI on a single over short that brought in third baseman Hunter Hagler and Henson. The Marshals saw their final run of the night in the top of the sixth, but the Bombers still weren’t finished. In the seventh Kopetsky reached second on a single and an error, then was brought in by a single from Henson. Hagler also came across the plate on a single by right fielder Graham McIntyre to round out the night. The game ended in a 9-3 victory for the Bombers.
Blake Kopetsky earned Player of the Game after going 3 for 5 with one homerun and three RBI. Zac Curtis held down the mound for the Bombers for the first six innings with seven strikeouts. Logan Burch handled the seventh inning with two strikeouts, followed by Andrew Hohn in the eighth, and Jason Freeman in the ninth, with one strikeout.
