ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Brenham Cubs lost to Aledo 38-10 Saturday in the Class 4A Division 2 State Championship game at AT&T Stadium. It was the Cubs' third trip to a State Title game. The last came back in 2009 when Brenham lost to Aledo 35-21.
The two teams traded field goals but the high powered Aledo offense got rolling in the second quarter. Daythan Davis scored on a two yard touchdown run to give the Bearcats a 10-3 lead. Later in the quarter Aledo made history. Luke Bishop's 28 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Newsome put the Bearcat offense over the 1,000 point mark for the season. Aledo is the first high school football team to score over 1,000 points in a season. The Bearcats led Brenham 17-3 at halftime.
The scoring picked back up in the fourth quarter when Bishop hit Taco Anderson with a 43 yard touchdown pass. Ryan Newsome added to the Aledo lead with a 59 yard touchdown run. Brenham found the end zone in the fourth quarter on a Caleb Hill 70 yard touchdown pass to Tre'Vonte Johnson. That cut the lead to 31-10. Hill finished the game with 216 yards passing.
Aledo would answer with an 18 yard Bishop to Anderson touchdown pass. Bishop was named the game's Offensive MVP. He threw for 157 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 133 yards. Jordan Mittie was named to Defensive MVP. He recorded eight tackles.
The loss is tough now, but the Cubs will eventually look back on their run with pride. Head coach Glen West said, "That's the thing about the playoff system is the only people who are going to be really, really happy at the end are the ones that win. We're very disappointed this second, but we have to remember 14 victories and the things that we did to this point that were truly amazing. I don't want to get caught in not seeing that. Our senior class, while it won't go down as the most talented group to come out of Brenham they're certainly one of the most fun to coach and they did a tremendous job all year."
Senior linebacker Erik Yeager added, "What I'll remember about it is definitely the guys. Being able to put on the uniform with these guys is the most fun I've ever had in my life. I honestly couldn't have dreamed it any better with these guys. I mean, maybe we didn't win but the saddest part is that it's over with these guys but I really couldn't be more happy to be a part of this team."
Brenham ends the season with a record of 14-2. Aledo finishes the season at 16-0.
