HOUSTON, Texas -- The Brenham Cubs beat Port Lavaca Calhoun 56-21 in a Class 4A Division 2 state semifinal game at Reliant Stadium in Houston. The Cubs will face Aledo for the state championship. That game will be played December 21 at noon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. It will be Brenham's third trip to the state title game.
Head coach Glen West said, "These kids are wonderful kids, they've worked so hard and we just take what we get. It's been magical and we're just so blessed right now to keep playing."
"I'm so happy. I'm so excited that these guys, we get blessed with another week and we get to got and show what we worked for and all the hard work's paying off and I'm so happy right now," added Cub senior linebacker Erik Yeager.
Offensive lineman Jaylon Whitley said, "It's crazy, it's really crazy. It's unbelievable right now. We've been talking about this since last year since the Elgin loss and we're finally here."
Brenham got the scoring started in the first quarter. James Homan caught a 16 yard touchdown pass on fake field goal to make it 7-0. Later in the first the Cubs pushed the advantage to 14-0 on a Tre'Vonte Johnson 11 yard touchdown reception from Caleb Hill. Calhoun scored on the final play of the first quarter on a Cory Williams one yard touchdown run to cut the Brenham lead to 14-7.
The Cubs scored first in the second quarter on an Earnest Patterson two yard touchdown run to make it a 21-7 game. Brenham followed that up with an onside kick but Port Lavaca recovered. The Sandcrabs had a short field to cover and found the end zone on a Hunter Boerm three yard touchdown run.
The Brenham defense got in on the scoring act in the second quarter. Bradon Baird recovered a fumble and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown to put Brenham up 28-14. On the Sandcrabs next offensive play Desmond Lockett recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown helping Brenham build a 35-14 halftime lead.
The Cubs wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half. On the second play of the third quarter Patterson scored on a 16 yard touchdown run to put Brenham in front 42-14. Following a Williams one yard touchdown run for the Sandcrabs Brenham delivered another big play. Hill and Johnson hooked up again for a score. This time it was a 61 yard touchdown pass to make the score 49-21. That capped off the scoring in the third quarter.
Hill would go back to the air in the fourth quarter for the final score of the game finding Courtland Sutton with a 34 yard touchdown pass.
