BRENHAM, Texas – Freshman Shanequa Gaston’s extra hours working with assistant coach Alexis Green have already begun paying off.
The Houston Dobie product scored 13 points and sophomore forward Audrisa Harrison shared the team lead with 13 of her own as the 25th-ranked Blinn Buccaneers defeated Northwood University’s junior varsity 89-22 Saturday at the Blinn P.E. Building.
“Shanequa is extremely athletic and every night we’re making her come in with Coach Green and get a little better with her fundamentals, but she can play,” Blinn (5-0) coach Jeff Jenkins said. “By conference, we definitely need her living up to her potential. If she gets it going, we could be really good.”
The Buccaneers certainly looked really good Saturday as Moe Bedford scored 11, Aarika Reyna and Darrecia Johnson each scored 10, Fatima Adams scored nine and Amari Jones scored eight. All eight of Jones’ points came in the second half as she returned from a knee injury to make her season debut.
“She got winded really quickly, but it was nice to get her some playing time in a game,” Jenkins said. “We’re just glad to get her back because she’s 5-11, long and she can really defend and hit open threes.”
Sophomore Khalisha Lee added seven points.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a 23-3 lead early in the contest and carried a 35-7 lead into halftime.
“The main thing is we got a chance to play some different people today,” Jenkins said.
The Buccaneers host McLennan Community College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Blinn P.E. Building.
