Bryan, Tx- The Laredo Lady Palominos kept trying to feed the ball to their star outside hitter, but the Blinn College volleyball team’s front line put up a wall.
The Buccaneers shut down Paula Mrowczynska and beat Laredo in four sets Saturday afternoon at the Blinn P.E. Building, 25-11, 25-15, 18-25, 25-22. Mrowczynska was limited to only seven kills and had a -.171 hitting percentage.
“We were monstrous on the block the first two sets,” Blinn (15-1, 3-0) coach Erin Mellinger said. “Laredo was trying to do everything they could to change their lineup to create some offense.”
Leading that charge was sophomore middle blocker Karian Castanon-Hill with 10 blocks. Middle blocker Bruna Evangelista had five, and Rylie Granger and Katey Kyle each had three.
With the front line on lockdown, the Buccaneers surged to large leads in the first two sets to put Laredo away with ease. The Lady Palominos, though, caught a spark in the third set behind Blinn miscues and kills from Alexis Villa and Joanna Boronczyk.
Laredo kept the game close in the fourth set, trailing 21-19 at one point, before two kills by Evangelista extended Blinn’s lead, and a kill by Castanon-Hill ended the match. Evangelista had 11 kills, and Castanon-Hill had seven.
Granger had 23 assists and four aces. Trinity Alualu led the defense with 13 digs.
“Laredo made some adjustments and wanted to go around or above our block,” Mellinger said. “That led to more balls going to Trinity in the middle-back of the court.”
It’s the second match in as many days the top-ranked Bucs have out-hit their opponent. Against Coastal Bend Friday night, Blinn held the Lady Cougars to a -.033 hitting percentage as it posted a .412 percentage. Against Laredo, the Bucs held the Lady Palominos to a .089 clip while they posted a .250 percentage.
The Bucs have won 13 consecutive matches heading into Tuesday’s match at Lee College at 6 p.m.
