COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The College Station Lady Cougars took sole possession of the district lead with a 1-0 victory at Cougar Field against the Brenham Cubettes.
Fourteen minutes into the 2nd half the Cougs scored off of a corner kick from Courtney McGrew. Under pressure from Lauren Spohn, the ball deflected off of the Brenham goalkeeper into the goal.
Shortly after the Cougs took the lead, Brenham created their best chance of the match when Au'Dresha Spates' breakaway shot went just wide of the goal.
College Station responded promptly when Lexi Bullard played a ball to Jaylen Hinckley whose shot Brenham goalkeeper Brittney Burdick tipped just over the crossbar. Ten minutes from time, Burdick made another outstanding save on a rocket from Cougar Kinsey Rhome taken from just outside the 18. A few minutes later, Rhome fired another shot off the crossbar.
Jj Handy (correct spelling - Capital J, little j) preserved the shutout for the Cougs, their 11th of the year. With the win, College Station ends the first half of district at 5-0, 14-5-1 overall. Next action will be on Friday in Navasota at 7:00 at Brule Stadium.
