The Lady Cougars won the 1st Annual Argyle Invitational by defeating Crandall, 3-1 in the championship game Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the Cougs defeated Frisco Lonestar in a hard fought match, 2-1. Lonestar took a 0-1 lead into halftime. With 20 minutes left in the game, Kinsey Rhome was taken down in the penalty box which resulted in a PK. Jaylen Hinckley took the PK and knotted the score to 1-1. With one and a half minutes remaining, Lauren Spohn played a ball over the top to Hinckley who beat the Lonestar keeper to the right to take the Cougars to the championship.
In the championship game versus Crandall, the Lady Cougars struck 2 minutes in when Madison Kothmann found Jaylen Hinckley racing toward the goal at the 12 yard line and put the ball past the keeper to take the score to 1-0. Two minutes later, Kinsey Rhome snuck behind the Crandall defense and went 1-v-1 with the keeper, sliding the ball into the back of the net, extending the Cougs' lead to 2-0. Crandall scored off a direct from 30 yards out a few minutes later, 1-2. With 18 minutes left in the first half, Rhome got behind the defense and scored her second goal of the match. When the final whistle blew, the Lady Cougs celebrated their 3-1 win with the championship trophy in hand.
Jaylen Hinckley and Courtney McGrew were named to the All-Tournament team. Hinckley had 7 goals in the tournament. McGrew anchored the defensive line.
The Cougars' overall record is 6-2. They will host Harker Heights on Tuesday at 6:00pm.
