COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- When the 3A portion of the UIL State Track meet gets underway in Austin on Saturday a trio of girls from College Station High School will be sporting the Purple of the upstart Cougars.
Kelsie Warren, Leah Lewis and Gabbi Orzabal will take to the track tomorrow at Mike Myers Stadium. Warren is 3A's top qualifier in the 3200 and 1600 meter run, while Lewis is state bound in the 3200 and Orzabal will participate in the 300 hurdles.
"It's such a blessing just to able to be running this week and especially to have my teammates with me," said Lewis. "It's an amazing experience and it's really cool to see how everything has worked out."
Warren was the favorite to claim the 3A cross country gold medal, but stumbled near the finish line and learned a valuable lesson. "Even though I'm going in as the favorite I don't underestimate anybody and anything can happen," said Warren. "I have to go out there and run my race and my coaches have trained me very well to be able to be here and it's going to be an awesome thing. Whatever happens happens and I'm going to run my best."
Earlier this week Orzabal was ask about making history at College Station High and knows the 'butterflies' will be felt as she gets ready to compete. "I know definitely I'll have those pre-race jitters, but I know what I can do and how to do it and I'll always do my best," said Gabbi.
Warren could be a double state champion, she and Lewis will compete in the 2 mile run at 8am Saturday morning, and then come back in the evening at 8:45 for the mile run. Orzabal will take to the blocks in the 300 hurdles at 8:05.
